GIS Specialist - Part-Time/Internship

We are looking for a passionate and driven individual to join our team as a part-time GIS Specialist. As a part-time employee, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with GIS, Cartography, data collection and cleaning, as well as production workflows. You will work closely with experienced professionals and contribute to meaningful projects.

Job Description

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to develop their skills in GIS and Cartography while gaining real-world experience in a dynamic work environment.

As a GIS Specialist, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in making basic map edits based on suggestions from the copy-editing team:
    • Reposition, add, or remove labels to meet cartographic requirements
    • Update boundaries as needed to align with malaria data and administrative changes
  • Support in cleaning and verifying administrative, 2nd-level, and 3rd-level polygons to develop a uniform global dataset for use in future projects:
    • Ensure that unified boundaries are used in both current and future map projects
    • Update data as administrative changes are confirmed
  • Contribute to improving current workflows:
    • Optimize workspaces and data management to streamline day-to-day operations
  • Serve as a backup for Geo place requests and verification:
    • Update or create Geo features based on requests from the editorial team
  • Conduct research, collect, and clean data for future disease mapping projects:
    • Gather and explore data for upcoming mapping projects
    • Clean and aggregate data for use in our (future) global dataset

What We Are Looking For:

  • Proficiency in ArcMap/ArcPro or QGIS
  • Strong knowledge of geodatabases, spatial analysis, and data visualization
  • Ability to independently discover and collect data
  • Basic proficiency in data manipulation and function application in Excel/Google Sheets

Position Details:

  • Employment Type: Part-time / Internship
  • Location: In-office with the potential for remote work based on performance and project needs
  • Hours: 15-20 hours/week
  • Duration: 3 months with the possibility of extension based on performance and project needs
  • Compensation: Paid, with an hourly rate ranging from $18 to $21.50, based on experience and education (Bachelor's, Graduate level, or higher)
